Questions We Hear Often

Healthy skin comes first.

We chose sugaring because it brings together effective hair removal, simple ingredients, thoughtful technique and less waste. Our approach is careful, consistent and always respectful of the skin.

Sugaring is a method of hair removal using a simple paste made from sugar, water and lemon.

The paste is applied at body temperature and hair is removed from the root in the direction it naturally grows. Unlike traditional strip waxing, sugaring requires no paper or cloth strips.

At HORTŪS, our sugar paste is vegan, non-GMO, biodegradable and water soluble.

Simple ingredients. Effective hair removal. A little easier on the skin and the environment.

There are many effective ways to remove hair. We chose sugaring because the technique and ingredients align naturally with how we care for skin.

Never hot
Sugar paste is used at body temperature, so there is no risk of burning the skin with hot wax.

Gentle on healthy skin
Sugar paste is less likely to adhere strongly to healthy living skin, which means less unnecessary pulling during removal and may help minimize irritation and the risk of skin lifting.

Hair is removed in its natural direction
This can help reduce hair breakage and make removal more comfortable.

A good option for sensitive skin
The simple ingredients, body-temperature application and skin-conscious technique make sugaring a good choice for many guests with sensitive or reactive skin.

Helpful for ingrown-prone skin
Removing hair in the direction of growth may help reduce breakage beneath the skin. Combined with regular exfoliation, hydration and consistent appointments, sugaring can help minimize ingrown hairs and bumps.

Regrowth may become finer with consistency
Hair is removed from the root. With regular sugaring, many guests notice softer, finer and less dense regrowth over time.

Less waste
No disposable paper or cloth strips are required. The sugar paste is biodegradable, water soluble and rinses away with water.

For us, it isn't about saying one method is right for everyone. Sugaring simply reflects how we want to approach hair removal: effective, skin-conscious and thoughtful about what we use and what we leave behind.

Both are effective methods of removing hair from the root when performed properly.

The difference is largely in the product and technique. Sugar paste is applied at body temperature rather than hot, is less likely to adhere strongly to healthy living skin and is removed in the direction of hair growth.

Sugaring also requires no disposable strips, and our paste contains only sugar, water and lemon.

These are some of the reasons many guests with sensitive skin, ingrown hairs or a preference for simpler ingredients choose sugaring.

Hair removal is never completely painless, but many guests find sugaring more comfortable than expected.

Removing hair in the direction of growth may help reduce breakage and discomfort. With consistent appointments, treatments often become quicker and more comfortable as hair growth becomes more consistent.

Sensitivity varies by person, treatment area and hair type.

For many people, yes.

Body-temperature application, simple ingredients and less adherence to healthy living skin make sugaring well suited to many guests with sensitive or reactive skin.

Sensitive skin and compromised skin are different. Sugaring should only be performed on skin that is intact and ready for treatment.

For many guests, yes.

Removing hair in its natural direction may help reduce breakage beneath the skin. Regular sugaring combined with gentle exfoliation, hydration and good home care can help minimize ingrown hairs and bumps.

Consistency matters here, too.

For best results, hair should generally be about ¼ inch (6 mm) long, approximately the length of a grain of rice.

Sugar can grip relatively short hair, so you don't need significant regrowth before every appointment.

Most guests enjoy smooth skin for approximately 3–5 weeks.

Results vary by treatment area, hormones, medications and your individual hair growth cycle.

With consistent appointments, many guests notice that regrowth becomes finer, softer and less dense over time.

Yes.

Our Brazilian sugaring removes hair from the front, labia, underside and butt strip. Hair may be left in front if preferred.

We also offer Bikini Front Only and Deep Bikini options for guests who prefer less hair removal.

We offer facial, bikini and body sugaring, including brows, face, underarms, arms, legs, stomach, back, buttocks and more.

Services are available for guests of all genders, although service availability and pricing may vary by area, hair density and time required.

If you don't see the area you're looking for, please contact us before booking.

For the best results:

• Allow hair to grow to approximately ¼ inch.
• Gently exfoliate 24–48 hours before your appointment.
• Avoid lotions, oils and self-tanner on the day of treatment.
• Avoid intentional tanning and significant sun exposure for 24–48 hours before.
• Arrive with clean, dry skin when possible.

Do not exfoliate skin that is already irritated, inflamed, sunburned or sensitized.

For the first 24 hours, avoid:

• Excessive heat
• Hot tubs + saunas
• Swimming pools
• Strenuous exercise
• Direct sun exposure + tanning
• Excessive friction on the treated area
• Scrubs + physical exfoliation
• Retinoids, exfoliating acids and other potentially irritating active skincare on the area

Keep skin clean and hydrated.

Once the skin has settled, gentle regular exfoliation and moisturization can help maintain smooth skin and minimize ingrown hairs.

Please postpone sugaring if the treatment area is:

• Sunburned, windburned, burned or peeling
• Cut, cracked, bleeding or significantly scabbed
• Bruised, swollen, blistered or significantly inflamed
• Experiencing an active rash, hives or unexplained irritation
• Affected by an active bacterial, fungal or viral infection
• Experiencing an active cold sore or lesion
• Unusually thin, fragile or sensitized
• Experiencing an active eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis or rosacea flare
• Still healing from a cosmetic or medical procedure

We do not sugar directly over suspicious or changing moles, warts, unidentified growths or other concerning skin lesions.

It depends on what you're using.

For the area being sugared, stop over-the-counter retinol, retinoids, AHA/BHA acids and strong exfoliating products for at least 5–7 days beforehand. Wait until the skin is completely calm before resuming them afterward.

If you use prescription tretinoin, adapalene, prescription-strength retinoids, topical steroids, prescription acne treatments or another prescription topical medication on the area, consult your prescribing physician or dermatologist before sugaring.

If the skin is dry, peeling, irritated or sensitized, postpone your appointment until it has fully recovered.

Never stop or alter prescribed medication in order to receive a cosmetic service unless directed by your treating medical provider.

If you are currently taking isotretinoin, avoid sugaring unless your prescribing dermatologist has specifically cleared you for treatment.

After completing isotretinoin, follow your dermatologist's guidance on when hair removal can safely resume.

For the same treatment area, we take a conservative approach:

Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin® or similar
Wait at least 1 week, and until redness, swelling, bruising or tenderness has resolved.

Dermal filler
Wait at least 2 weeks, and until swelling, bruising and tenderness have resolved.

Dermaplaning or microdermabrasion
Wait at least 1–2 weeks, and until the skin is completely settled.

Superficial chemical peel
Wait at least 2 weeks, and until all peeling, redness and sensitivity have resolved.

Microneedling
Wait at least 2–4 weeks, and until the skin is completely healed.

Laser or IPL
Treatment intensity varies considerably. Follow your treating provider's recommended waiting period and do not sugar until the skin is completely healed.

Medium or deep chemical peels, ablative or resurfacing lasers, surgery or other intensive procedures
Follow your treating physician's guidance before hair removal.

These are conservative general guidelines. Your treating provider's instructions always take precedence.

Effective hair removal. Thoughtful skin care. Less waste.

Individual skin responses vary.

If you have a medically managed skin condition, use prescription medication that may affect the treatment area, recently had a medical or cosmetic procedure, are pregnant with medical concerns, have impaired healing or aren't sure whether sugaring is appropriate for you, please consult your physician, dermatologist or treating provider before booking.
